Individual Therapy

Trauma1“Nothing seems to go right.”

That’s what Iselsia* usually said when she felt this way: hopeless. She didn’t have to say it out loud; an inner voice was always telling her she’d never get it right.

Iselsia is an immigrant mother of three and works hard to make ends meet. She is present for her children and is always there for her friends.

She was always there for everyone else, but her own needs and desires went unfulfilled.

No matter how hard she tried…

She went out of her way for everyone else.

She was generous and accommodating in her relationships.

And even though it was hard, she made every effort to fit in.

Iselsia thought she was doing everything right, yet dark thoughts plagued her.

Trauma1Something was holding her back.

Iselsia knew it was time to reach out for help. That’s when she came to me.

In therapy, I learned that she had left her country of origin to escape her relationship and create a better life for her family.

She told me,

“I don’t know why I am attracted to the same kind of men. My father was disrespectful and abusive to my mother. I vowed not to marry my father’s type, but here I am, caught up in the same cycle despite leaving my home country. I don’t want this to be the legacy I leave behind for my children.”

A wise choice…

Even though therapy is considered taboo in Iselsia’s culture, she made the right choice to get help.

Iselsia was initially uncomfortable sharing her story for fear of judgment. But once we got to know each other, she could see this was a judgment-free space.

Together, we explored her past, and we practiced establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries. Iselsia learned that some of her people-pleasing tendencies were rooted in the trauma of having grown up in a disordered household.

With new insight and time, Iselsia regained her confidence, restored her relationships, and enjoyed the better life she always wanted with her family.

No matter where you are, there’s a silver lining and a better tomorrow.
